Have you heard? We just launched our new podcast, Hi, Energy! In the season premiere, our host, climate comedian Esteban Gast, sits down with Jakub Zielkiewicz, Director of Climate Planning at ICF, to tackle the important—yet often overlooked—topic of decarbonization. The dynamic duo explain what decarbonization means for SoCal and the role each of us can play in the state’s big emissions-cutting goals.
What is Decarbonization?
Sure, it sounds like a big, scary science word. But Esteban and Jakub make decarbonization accessible and—dare we say—fun?! Jakub explains that decarbonization is all about reducing carbon dioxide emissions from our daily activities. He digs into everything from practical tips and simple behavior changes, like pre-cooling our homes and minimizing the use of energy-intensive appliances during peak hours, to making energy efficiency upgrades in our homes and switching to EVs and renewable energy sources. By the end of the episode, we bet you’ll have learned enough to be able to casually drop “decarbonization” into your daily conversations.
Challenges Come With Solutions
Esteban and Jakub also dive into the challenges Southern California faces when it comes to decarbonization. Access to clean transportation, safe biking and walking infrastructure, and affordable zero-emission vehicles are just some of the hurdles. However, you’ll hear how LA Metro’s campaigns and the expansion of the transit network are helping the city make strides toward cleaner and more efficient infrastructure.
The Big Picture
You may be surprised to find out that decarbonization is not just about saving the planet—it’s also about creating healthier, more equitable communities for all. Reducing carbon emissions leads to improved air quality and better health outcomes. A recent $329 million grant from the California Energy Commission to the County of Los Angeles for the Southern California Equitable Building Decarbonization Coalition is a testament to the region’s ongoing efforts to make decarbonization inclusive.
